Addiction: The Family Disease

Addiction is a disease of the family. When you learn the origin of the word "disease" it comes from Middle English - between the 12th and 15th century A.D. Literally it means lack of ease. In modern language, the Oxford dictionary defines it as a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury. When addiction is present in a family everyone suffers. Everyone has a "lack of ease". When addiction is first brought out of the closet as a serious progressive and chronic illness, many people believe that it is only the problem of the addict. Not the case. Just as with any illness, addiction requires a family plan to move forward to health complete with support systems for everyone.

We have started Avvia as a safe place for family members to learn about addiction, its impact on the family and to find a safe way forward. It is our passion. We know that families can find comfort and solutions. We have lived it and learned that there is hope.
